Frequently Asked Questions?

  • How soon after breast feeding can I get a breast surgery? Ideally, you should allow 3-6 months after completion of breast feeding to undergo surgery.
  • What type of implants do you use? We offer both saline and silicone breast implants. They are smooth, round implants, manufactured by Allergan.
  • Can I get a breast lift alone or do I need implants? Both are options depending on your desired breast shape and size. Dr. Biskup reviews the pros and cons of each approach and takes the time to listen to what YOU want for YOUR body.
  • Can you do a breast lift and place implants at the same time? YES! Doing both together is a perfectly safe and effective procedure. However, there are some limitations to the size of implant and extent of lifting needed.
  • Are implants safe? YES! Breast implants are FDA approved. Research has shown no association with autoimmune diseases. However, the are not lifetime devices and do need to be replaced at regular intervals (10-20 years).

Commonly Asked Questions

Am I the right candidate for Breast Augmentation?

You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation if you want to enhance the size or shape of your breasts, restore volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss, correct asymmetry, or improve overall breast proportions. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and are non-smokers or willing to stop smoking before and after surgery. A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to determine if the procedure is right for you.

What types of implants are available?

There are two main types of breast implants:
-Silicone gel implants: Filled with a cohesive silicone gel that feels similar to natural breast tissue.
-Saline implants: Filled with sterile saltwater after insertion.
Implants also come in different shapes (round or anatomical/teardrop), sizes, and profiles to suit individual body types and aesthetic goals.

How do I choose the right implant size?

Choosing the right implant size depends on several factors including your body frame, chest width, natural breast tissue, skin elasticity, and desired look. During your consultation, your surgeon may use measurements, photos, and implant sizers to help you visualize different options and select the size that best fits your goals.

Where are implants placed (above or below the muscle)?

Breast implants can be placed in two main positions:
-Sub glandular (above the chest muscle): Positioned directly behind the breast tissue.
-Submuscular or dual plane (partially under the muscle): Positioned beneath the chest muscle.
Each approach has advantages depending on your anatomy and desired results. Your surgeon will recommend the best placement for you.

Where will the incisions and scars be located?

Common incision locations include:
-Inframammary: In the fold underneath the breast
-Periareolar: Around the edge of the areola
-Transaxillary: In the armpit
Your surgeon will choose the incision location based on implant type, anatomy, and aesthetic goals. Scars typically fade significantly over time.

What is recovery like after surgery?

Most patients return home the same day after surgery. Mild to moderate swelling, soreness, and tightness are normal for the first few days. Many patients return to light activities within about a week, while strenuous exercise should be avoided for about 4–6 weeks. Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative instructions to support healing.

How long do implants last and will they need to be replaced?

Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices. While many implants last 10–20 years or longer, they may eventually need to be replaced due to changes in the breast, implant rupture, or personal preference.

Will implants affect breastfeeding or nipple sensation?

Many women are able to breastfeed successfully after breast augmentation. However, some patients may experience temporary or, rarely, permanent changes in nipple sensation. The risk can depend on incision placement and individual anatomy.

Will I need a breast lift with my augmentation?

If your breasts have significant sagging (ptosis), your surgeon may recommend combining breast augmentation with a breast lift. A lift raises and reshapes the breast tissue while implants add volume, helping achieve a more youthful appearance.

What is the difference between silicone and saline implants?

-Silicone implants contain a cohesive silicone gel and are known for a natural feel and appearance.
-Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater and inserted empty, allowing for smaller incisions. If a saline implant ruptures, the body safely absorbs the fluid.
Both types are FDA-approved and safe when placed by a qualified surgeon.

What is breast implant illness?

Breast implant illness (BII) is a term used by some patients to describe a range of symptoms they believe may be related to their implants, such as fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, or autoimmune-like symptoms. Research is ongoing, and while a direct causal link has not been fully established, some patients report improvement after implant removal.

What risks or complications should I be aware of?

As with any surgery, breast augmentation carries potential risks, including:
-Infection
-Bleeding
-Implant rupture or leakage
-Capsular contracture (scar tissue tightening around the implant)
-Changes in nipple or breast sensation
-Implant shifting or asymmetry
-Need for revision surgery
Choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon and carefully following post-operative instructions can help minimize risks.
