Mommy Makeover Recovery in Wichita, Kansas: What to Expect After Surgery
A mommy makeover can be a transformative procedure, but recovery is an important part of the process. Your body needs time to heal, adjust, and settle into your results.
At Heartland Plastic Surgery in Wichita, Kansas, we want every patient to feel informed and prepared before heading home after surgery. Every recovery looks a little different but knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable and confident in the weeks ahead.
Below is a general overview of what recovery after a mommy makeover often looks like for our Wichita, Kansas patients.
Pain Management and Mobility
The first week after surgery is typically the most tender and uncomfortable part of recovery. Many patients find that the first few days are the most difficult, with soreness, tightness, swelling, and limited mobility.
Staying ahead of your pain is important during this time. We will provide you with a personalized plan for pain management, which may include ibuprofen, Journavx, or prescription pain medication when needed. Taking medications as directed can help you stay comfortable enough to rest, walk, and begin moving safely.
For the first week after an abdominoplasty or mommy makeover, you will walk with your hips slightly flexed, or bent forward. This helps protect your incision and keeps too much tension off the abdominal area while it heals. As you move into the following week, you should gradually be able to stand taller and begin walking more upright.
Because walking bent forward can sometimes cause back discomfort, especially for patients with existing back pain, a walker can be helpful during the early stages of recovery. It can provide extra support, make getting around easier, and help you stay steady as you heal.
Compression Garments, Foams, and Drains
After surgery, you will leave in a post-operative compression garment. You will wear this continuously for the first two days after surgery.
On your second post-operative day, you will be able to remove your garment, tapes, and foams so you can shower. After your shower, you will reapply your garment and continue caring for your drains as instructed.
If you have drains, they will need to be emptied several times a day at first. As your drainage decreases throughout the week, you may only need to empty them once or twice a day. Keeping track of your drain output is important and helps us monitor your healing. Typically, drains stay in place typically 1 week, rarely 2 weeks.
Compression garments are worn for 6 weeks, both day and night. They can be taken off to shower. After this, they are then worn during the day only for another 6 weeks. We prefer the Marena line for garments for surgery.
Your One-Week Post-Operative Appointment
At your one-week post-operative appointment, we will remove your Steri-Strips and skin tapes, check all of your incisions, and make sure everything is healing as expected.
This is also when we will talk with you about the next phase of recovery, including continued garment use, incision care, activity restrictions, and any adjustments needed based on your individual healing.
Your Post-Operative Garment and Swelling
Compression is an important part of recovery after a mommy makeover. You will wear your post-operative garment continuously for the first six weeks after surgery.
For the next six weeks, you will typically wear your garment during the daytime, when you are more active and more likely to experience swelling. This gives you a total of about three months of compression.
At the three-month mark, most patients are able to stop wearing their garment altogether. This is also when a significant amount of swelling has resolved and you can begin to see a clearer picture of your results.
Keep in mind that your body will continue to heal and refine over time. Some swelling can remain for several months, especially after body contouring procedures.
Lifting and Activity Restrictions
For the first two weeks after surgery, do not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds, which is about the weight of a gallon of milk. This is especially important if you have young children at home, as you will need help with lifting and caregiving during this part of recovery.
For the following four weeks, your lifting restriction increases to 30 pounds. In total, you should plan on six weeks of lifting restrictions.
After an abdominoplasty, it is also important to avoid engaging your core for the first six weeks. This means avoiding core exercises, sit-ups, heavy lifting, running, biking, and other vigorous activities that create a lot of movement or jostling in the abdominal area.
Sexual activity should also be avoided for about four weeks after surgery.
At six weeks, your activity restrictions are typically lifted and you can begin returning to normal activities, including the gym, lifting, and exercise. We will make sure you are healing appropriately before clearing you for full activity.
Scar Healing and Scar Care
Scars take time to mature, and patience is an important part of the process. It can take anywhere from 12 to 18 months for scars to fully settle into their final appearance.
During that time, your body is continually remodeling the scar. It may look red, raised, firm, or uneven at different stages of healing before gradually becoming flatter, lighter, and softer.
At Heartland Plastic Surgery, we strongly recommend silicone-based scar products. Silicone is the only scar treatment with strong research supporting its ability to improve the appearance of scars over time.
Silicone tape is especially helpful after breast and body procedures. We offer specialty silicone tape for breast procedures that is pre-cut to fit around the nipple and along breast incisions, so there is no need to cut and shape the tape yourself.
Most patients will wear silicone tape for several months after surgery, or until they are happy with the appearance of their scars.
Moving Forward in Your Recovery
Recovery after a mommy makeover takes time, but each week brings more comfort, mobility, and confidence. The early days are focused on rest, pain management, gentle movement, and protecting your incisions. As you heal, you will gradually return to your normal routine and begin seeing your results take shape.
At Heartland Plastic Surgery, we are proud to guide mommy makeover patients in Wichita, Kansas through every stage of the recovery process. Our team will monitor your healing, answer your questions, and help you feel prepared for what comes next.
